With a lifelong interest in fashion and a background in business, Alison Barnard launched her first retail store, in-jean-ius in July of 2005. Barnard researched and planned her entrepreneurial venture while completing the Master’s program at Babson College. As an avid shopper, Barnard found it difficult to find the right pair of jeans for her shape. Boutiques offered the service but lacked the selection, while Department store had the selection but lacked the service. With a service centric approach, in-jean-ius quickly earned a loyal clientele who longed for more than denim and cute tops. Customers valued her taste and wanted more options, so when another location became available, Alison took the opportunity to open Twilight, in March of 2007. Inspired by that magical time between day and night, Twilight features clothing for any type of occasion.
Barnard’s accomplishments earned her a spot on Inc. magazine’s “Top 30 Under 30.” She was named one of Boston’s 25 Most Stylish according to the Boston Globe and for the last two years was put on the 100 Best Dressed Bostonians list by Fashion Boston. Barnard received one of five Winning Women awards at the 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year Awards hosted by Ernst & Young. In 2009, Alison Barnard teamed up with fashion expert, Stacy London from TLC’s “What Not to Wear” and Woolite to participate in the Find the Look Keep the Look Program. Barnard’s store, in-jean-ius was hand selected by Stacy London and Woolite as one of the top 10 most fashionable boutiques in the country. This fall Alison can be seen gracing the pages of Boston Common Magazine.
Alison’s Style Philosophy
“I consider myself a style chameleon. My style is complicated and multi-layered much like my personality. Classic, chic, cool, casual, edgy, girlie, or glam. I believe personal style isn’t about following one particular style; it’s about having fun and trying new things. Life is not a catwalk, enjoy what your wearing, and try new things. Your wardrobe is an extension of you. Make it distinctly yours, whether you are in a little black dress, mixing patterns or adding bold accessories. When you look good you feel good! I encourage my friends and customers to take the extra time out of their day for themselves. Learn what looks good on your shape and don’t be afraid to ask for help. BUT, and I stress this the most, wear what you want and do it with confidence.“
